Learn MoreThe Artificial Sweeteners
So far, there are two kinds of artificial no calorie sweeteners in the market today. Aspartame is the type with popular names like Equal and NutraSweet and is widely used for consumer goods like diet sodas, candies and chewing gums, shakes and yogurt, instant coffees, teas and choco mixes, chewable vitamins and other products with sugar-free added in their labels. For people suffering from diabetes, Aspartame is the best choice to enjoy the sweet dishes they can concoct because aspatame also comes in tablets or powder form for home use. But Aspartame is not quite effective in cooking, particularly in baking, because it looses its sweetness once heated.
Sucralose is three times sweeter than Aspartame and quite stable in extreme heat and it can be used for baking , thus more cooking people uses sucralose than aspartame. You can find them in bulk pack in most supermarkets with names like Splenda and SucraPlus.
Although both artificial sweeteners have controversies regarding its safety for human consumption, they are still widely accepted worldwide as sugar alternatives for diabetics and low calorie conscious people like me. I’m using Aspartame for now, but soon i’ll be switching for Sucralose for added convenience and new dimension in usage.
